Indian Peace Medals
1871 Ulysses S. Grant Indian Peace Medal NGC MS-62

1871-Dated. Ulysses S. Grant Indian Peace Medal. IP-42. Struck at the United States Mint in Bronze. Dies Engraved by Anthony Paquet. NGC graded Mint State-62.
Julian IP-42. 63.1mm. 127.82 grams. This U.S. Grant Indian Peace Medal evidences another redesign of the reverse by the mint engravers. It has excellent natural medium chestnut-brown color and a sharp strike. This design has a border of thirty-six stars surrounding a central vignette, which includes a Bible, agricultural implements and a globe. The legend reads, "ON EARTH 1871 GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN," surrounds. This medal design also has the distinction of being the only Indian Peace medal upon which the name of the president does not appear. Although mintage records are scant for non-silver strikings of this medal, our experience has been that the bronze Grant medals show up far less frequently than any of the other copper medals, with the exception of the five oval types and the round Harrison. The last example we record as having offered was in our EAHA Auction, April 22, 2006, Lot 962, graded raw as Gem Uncirculated, which sold for $2,360. This current medal is accompanied by its NGC photo certification.
