Autographs
Irving Berlin Signed Photo Composer of "God Bless America"

IRVING BERLIN, American Composer and Lyricist.
Photograph Signed, "Irving Berlin," blue fountain pen ink, 1917, 10" x 8", Superb Near Mint. The nice vintage matte-finish image has been inscribed "All good wishes from Irving Berlin." The portrait was taken by Tyck, as his signature and date appear below Berlin's. A couple traces of light silvering and a barely noticeable spot under Berlin's inscription; otherwise in fine condition. Excellent contrast between the photo and the ink; autograph is bold and crisp.

In 1917 during World War I, Berlin staged a musical revue "Yip Yip Yaphank" while at Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York. The revue was a patriotic tribute to the United States Army. Berlin composed the song "God Bless America" for the revue but decided against using it. It was also considered for the National Anthem, but was rejected by the press for coming from a Jewish composer. The revue was later included in the 1943 movie "This Is the Army" featuring other Berlin songs, including the famous title piece, as well as a full-length rendition of "God Bless America" by Kate Smith.

Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
