Autographs
Benjamin F. Butler as a Massachusetts Representative

BENJAMIN F. BUTLER, Union General and Politician.
Circa February 1890 Clipped Signature, "Benj. F. Butler Mass" on a 5" x 2" clip, Choice Fine. This is a very large 3.75" and bold signature by Butler was clipped from a letter dated February 14, 1890 and written from Merriam Park, [Minnesota] that from what we can guess, was a request for an autograph. Signature accomplished on a bright and clean slip of wove paper with slightly irregular margins and perfect for framing.

Benjamin Franklin Butler (1818-1893) was an American General and politician. During the Civil War, he became Brigadier General of the Massachusetts militia and Major General of volunteers, commanding the land forces which captured New Orleans in 1862. As Military Governor of that city, he earned the name "Beast Butler." After seven months, he was charged with corruption and dismissed. Butler served as a U.S. Representative and Governor of Massachusetts, and in 1884 ran unsuccessfully as the presidential candidate of the Anti-Monopoly Party and the Greenback-Labor Party.
