c. 1820 Declaration of Independence Broadside Textile (DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE). c. 1820-1825 Broadside of The Declaration of Independence, Printed on White Cotton Textile, Choice Very Fine. c. 1820-1825 Broadside of The Declaration of Independence, Printed on White Cotton Textile, Choice Very Fine. This extremely rare English Broadside measures 31.5" x 27.5" (sight), within a thin wooden frame, under glass and not examined out of its frame. It is printed in rich brown ink, on white fine cotton linen cloth and is in a superior, quite excellent quality as compared to most other period example we have seen. This print has about a half dozen scattered, small holes that are mostly at the upper printed design near Washington, which tend to blend into the dark brown print. There is a small 1" repair within the Signer area at center, about 3" below the massive signature of "John Hancock." Overall, the quality is excellent for a textile of this age. The entire text of the Declaration of Independence, plus all of the facsimile signature of the signers are surrounded by vignettes of each of the seals of the Thirteen Original Colonies, plus three large upper center vignette portraits of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. At bottom left is a vignette showing the "Boston Tea Party;" with text below reading "The Patriotic Bostonians discharging British Ships in Boston Harbour." At the lower right is a vignette of General Burgoyne's famous surrender at Saratoga, with text below reading "Genl. Burgoyne Surrenders to Genl. Gates at Saratoga." There are other ornate, fancy printed border designs. This fabulous original Broadside is vastly superior to the very tattered piece shown illustrated on page 57 of "Threads of History" by Herbert Collins and nearly as nice as the similar looking print as illustrated on page 72, item 58 (printed in blue, which is the DuPont example held at the Winterthur Museum). The only other similar example we sold was in our EAHA Auction, August 28, 2004, Lot 515, graded Very Fine, which sold for $4,370. This current museum quality example is more attractive , as displayed on our catalog cover. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
