Edward Everett Writes about the Seneca Treaty and the Council of Indians EDWARD EVERETT, celebrated New England Orator and Politician, shared the platform with Lincoln at Gettysburg. 1838 Autograph Letter Signed "Edward Everett" in brown ink on two-page address leaf, Boston, MA, 9.75" x 7.75", Fine. Writing during his term as Governor of Massachusetts, Everett addresses himself to Samuel Bettle and Thomas Evans of Philadelphia, concerning a treaty with Native Americans: "I have your favor of the 5th inst. At the late meeting of the Executive Council of the Commonwealth, all the papers relative to the Seneca Treaty which have come into my hands, were referred to a committee of that board; - And it was recommended by the Committee . That a superintendent should be appointed, on behalf of the Commonwealth, to attend the Council of the Indians, at which the amended treaty is to be submitted for their consideration..." Exceptional content! The letter has several separations and edge splits, repaired with tape, and a quarter-sized hole from the wax seal, some stains, but the writing is legible and clear. Edward Everett was a prominent Massachusetts statesman and orator and a Unitarian clergyman who made many famous speeches for the Union cause. He was U.S. Representative, Governor of Massachusetts, Minister to Great Britain, President of Harvard, Secretary of State, and U.S. Senator. He is best known for his two-hour oration preceding President Lincoln's five-minute Gettysburg Address. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
