JAMES A. GARFIELD, 20th President of the United States.
Autograph Letter Signed "J.A. Garfield" as a member of the House of Representatives, April 16, 1875, Washington, D.C., 9.5" x 7.5", Choice Very Fine. Addressed to B.F. Sanborn of Boston, MA. In part: "I have earnestly hoped that it would be possible for me to be with you at the meeting of the Social Science Association of Detroit on the Third prox. But as I intimated to you, in a former letter, I have long been contemplating a trip to California, and I find it necessary for me to go very soon if I go at all. I have concluded to leave next week and shall therefore be deprived of the pleasure of attending the meeting..."
Some tape remnants at two corners on the back of the page. Boldly written and signed in dark brown ink.
