1856 Military Appointment Signed by Both President Franklin Pierce and Secretary of War Jefferson Davis FRANKLIN PIERCE & JEFFERSON DAVIS. President of the United States. Jefferson Davis, U.S. Secretary of War and President of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War Era. Dated August 1, 1856, magnificent quality 1856 Ornate Vellum Military Appointment Signed by President Franklin Pierce and Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, Choice Extremely Fine. The dramatic signature of future Confederate president Jefferson Davis, here in his earlier capacity as Franklin Pierce's Secretary of State, is extremely rare on these appointment certificates. This choice quality ornately Printed on Vellum, Military Commission Document, displays Davis' rich brown signature beside the larger endorsement of President Pierce. The partly-printed text announces the elevation of Miles D. McAlester to, "Brevet Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers." There are ornate engraved militaria images, bold text and an intact raised seal of the War Office add flair to the 15.5" x 19.5" Appointment certificate. Its display quality is Excellent. This documents large 2.25" diameter official seal remains fully intact at the upper left. The combination of these two signatures is very rare and highly prized by collectors. This is the finest quality example we have offered, and is worth consideration of a premium as such. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
