FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. c. 1939, Signature "Franklin D. Roosevelt" as President on a 7" x 3" green folded clip from a piece of green White House Stationery, Choice Mint. This is an excellent bold example of his signature measuring nearly 4 inches long. The signature was originally removed from a piece of White House letterhead, one of many pre-signed blanks that F.D.R. would place aside in the event that a letter was required when he was unavailable to sign it. The signature is offered together with an engraved 2" oval portrait of Roosevelt on a very clean 6" x 8" card as well as a wonderful 4 x 5" Underwood & Underwood photograph of the 32nd President. The material was obtained from the estate of Grace Tully, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's personal secretary. (3 items) Grace Tully (1900-1984) faithfully served the man she called "The Chief" for seventeen years: from his years as Governor through his tenure as President. She wrote of her role as a witness to history in a 1949 autobiography, F.D.R.: My Boss. Tully was with the President when he passed away in Warm Springs, Georgia, April 12, 1945. She returned to the Oval Office to pack his personal papers and kept a huge archive of material, even "scraps" of paper as treasured keepsakes. Most of the Tully estate was part of a well-publicized case that recently played-out in the press – the conviction of Lord Conrad Black. (Black used his company's money to purchase the majority of the Tully collection; that property is now on deposit at the F.D.R. Presidential Library in Hyde Park, New York.)
