Teddy Roosevelt Signed Quote: "Nations are made..." THEODORE ROOSEVELT & WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT. 1. Undated Autograph Note Signed "Theodore Roosevelt", in fountain pen ink on "Oyster Bay, Long Island, NY" personal stationery, measuring 9.75" x 6.75", in which he quotes from his book "The Great Adventure" (1918), Very Fine. The signature is light in areas, but firm. The quote reads: "Nations are made, defended, and preserved, not by the illusionists, but by the men and women who practise the homely virtues in lives of peace, and who in lives of righteous war are ready to die, or to send those they love best, to die, for a shining ideal." Teddy Roosevelt autograph letters are quite valuable, and this autograph note, quoting from his book, is rare. 2. December 21, 1914, Typed Letter Signed, "Wm H Taft", in fountain-pen ink on personal letterhead, New Haven, CT, 9.25" x 6.75", Very Fine. Taft apologizes to the Rev. John Wesley Hill, of NY, for not attending a "Peace Mass Meeting". At the bottom he has written a personal note: "I was not able to see Root on my visit to Washington because I had to hurry away unexpectedly."
