American Revolution
Receipt Signed By Minuteman Major Joseph Thompson

February 25th, 1777, Revolutionary War, Manuscript Document, Receipt for Money Paid to Minuteman Major Joseph Thompson by the Paymaster of the 4th Regiment, Brimfield, MA, Fine.
In this handwritten Revolutionary War Document, Major Joseph Thompson acknowledges receipt of money due to 5 named individuals (apparently enlisted men in the 4th Regiment), and signs with "Joseph Thompson Maj." This 12" x 7.75" document is dated at Brimfield (MA), and is docketed on the back: "Orders upon Capt. Hawood [Heywood] Pay Master for the 4th Regiment." The 5 men who have signed over their wages to Maj. Thompson are: Nathaniel Miller, Joseph Lilley, Jacob Townsley, Gad Townsley, and Benjamin Blodget. This document is complete, toned and slightly faded, with a couple .5" margin tears. This document has a thin strip of paper reinforcing the edges on the back. A fine Revolutionary War Document.

Joseph Thompson (1733-1795) a native of Brimfield, MA, was Captain of a company of Minutemen, in Col. Timothy Danielson's Regiment, which marched on the Lexington Alarm of April 19, 1775. Later he was a Captain in Lt. Col. Thomas Nixon's 4th Regiment. He was later promoted to Major in Col. Nixon's Regiment. He was taken prisoner at Young's House February 3, 1780 and exchanged December 8, 1780. Thomas Nixon (1736-1800) was an Ensign during the French & Indian War. He rose through the ranks, becoming a Colonel of the 4th Regiment and later the 5th and 6th Regiments.
