Historic Revolutionary War American Manuscript Document Concerning The Sloop "Sally" 1779, Revolutionary War, Manuscript Document, Purchase Agreement Concerning the Sloop called "Sally" into "Service of the United States," Very Fine. This document indicates how the Sloop called "Sally" was originally obtained, how much was paid to purchase it and who the two, previous Philadelphia Merchant owners were. It also describes the purchase of the vessel by the U.S. Government. The original positions where both faded seal were affixed onto the document are easy to identify. It is written very clearly with brown ink on fine laid paper with watermark and measures 8.75" x 7". This document reads, in full: "Know all men by these present that we the underwritten Nicholas Low and Alexander Foster both at present of the City of Philadelphia Merchants are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency George Clinton Esq, Governor and Commander in chief in and over the State of New York or his successors in the sum of five thousand pounds current money of the State of New York for the payment whereof we bind ourselves our heirs executors and administrators in witness whereof we have hereunto affixed our hands and seals this 10th day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand and seven hundred and seventy-nine. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas on or about the 24th day of March last past the Sloop a vessel called the Sally then lying at the Providence in the State of Rhode Island in the possession of the above named Nicholas Low was by order of Major General John Sullivan detained from him and employed in the service of the United States being then appraised by Persons.... actually chosen by the Parties and valued as she then lay with all her sails rigging anchors cables and appurtenances at the sum of nineteen hundred pounds. Lawful money of the State of Rhode Island aforesaid and whereas the said Nicholas Low by his Memorial presented to the Honorable the Congress hearing dates the 9th day of August last part did claim for himself and others Subjects of the State of New ork the said vessel praying that she might be restored to him with such wages as she hath earned in their service whereupon Congress directed the said vessel to be delivered to the order of his Excellency George Clinton Esq. Governor of the State of New York. Now therefore if any part of the said Sloop and vessel shall at any time hereafter in due course of law be adjudged forfeited to the State of New York and he this said Nicholas Low shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said George Clinton Esq: Governor of the State of New York aforesaid or his successor within sixty days after demand such proportion of this appraised valuation of the said vessel or Sloop Sally as shall be in manner aforesaid adjudged forfeited to the State of New York then this obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. Sealed and delivered in the presence of Sam Wilcox, Sam Clarkson, Nicholas Low and Alex. Foster." There are clear tape reinforcements at the edges of the folds. There is also some overall toning with slight chips and tears along the edge that do not affect the readability of this historic United States Naval related document.
