Two "Progress Proofs" Prints of George Washington c. 1850 Pair of Progress Proofs of a Print of George Washington, Very Fine or better. Identical images of George Washington, seen holding a rolled-up copy of a parchment labeled "American Independence." The plate size is 10" x 6.75", with the image appearing slightly smaller. Both Proofs are on oversized sheets measuring 16" x 12." Both have scattered toning spots, few of which affect the images. The earliest Proof appears almost as a line-drawing of Washington, with no background or shading except on the head, hand, and document. The second Proof is printed on a thin sheet of India Paper that is mounted to the oversized sheet. The sheet is heavily toned. This one appears to be the final version, as it is hand-signed by the painter in pencil beneath the image and also by Charles B. Hall (the printer, perhaps), both of whom seem to be okaying the final "draft." Extremely rare -- we've never seen this print before in any of our travels. (2 Proofs) Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
