Exquisite 1856 Silk Woven Textile of George Washington

1856, Silk Woven Textile of George Washington, Choice Extremely Fine.
This wonderful textile in gold and white thread on cream-colored silk measures 22" x 17" and has been matted and framed to an overall size of 36" x 27.5" in an ornate period gilt-gesso carved frame. The Stevensgraph-like machine-woven textile in muted polychrome silks features an oval, shoulder-length portrait of George Washington with "First In War- First In Peace- First in the Hearts of His Countrymen" bordering the image with spread-winged eagle surmount, and marked "Lyon 18JR56." The weaving is amazing and has an almost holographic effect at certain angles. Slight chipping and absences in the silk along the upper left edge, barely noticeable. The glass has been removed from the original carved frame, which was produced by "Thos. Agnew & Sons, Carvers, Gilders... 14 Exchange Street, Manchester..."--as printed on an aged, cracking label on the back. Thomas Agnew (1794-1871) was the founder of Thos. Agnew & Sons, art dealers. The first silk woven Washington portrait of this type that we've seen or offered!
