Washington Buttons
"George Washington" Embossed Leather Commemorative Button Not Listed in Albert Catalog c. 1832, Embossed Leather George Washington Commemorative Button, Made by Thomas Wells Ingram, Very Fine. 24 mm. Made of dark leather with a brass shank. Naked bust of Washington facing right, on a lined background, surrounded by a ring of 36 stars. The original shank is still intact. In pleasing condition, with some natural age to the leather. The backmark on this button reads, "T. Wells Ingram's Patent." There is an almost identical button with heraldic eagle design in the center instead of Washington. That piece is believed to be an American official button, perhaps for the diplomatic service. Thomas Wells Ingram was a medallist and button maker in Birmingham, England during the 1820's and 1830's. He engraved the dies for the 1783 dated Washington Cents (around 1820). Not listed in Albert's "Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons." A wonderful find for the advanced collector of Buttons and Washingtonia. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
