Post-Revolutionary War to Civil War
1786 Warrant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Treasurer's Office to Enforce the Collection of Taxes, Boston, Fine. 12.5" x 7.5". Light soiling and toning, some fold splits, minor paper loss at lower left with no effect. Partly printed and completed in manuscript, signed by Thomas Ivers, the Treasurer and Receiver-General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This document authorizes the Sheriff of Worcester County to collect unpaid taxes owed by Benjamin Saunders. Now, Saunders was not just some ordinary citizen behind on his taxes; rather, he was the tax collector from Athol who initially owed more than £254 in taxes he had (or was supposed to have) collected! This is the first example we have seen that actually shows a partial payment and reduction in the total taxes, indicating (perhaps) the effectiveness of the Sheriff's efforts. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
