Waters," Baltimore, no date, the clipped signature is over 2" long, the CDV measures 3.75" x 2.5", both Choice Very Fine. Both pieces are mounted on an 11" x 8.5" black sheet of paper. Johnston was a West Point graduate and joined the Confederate forces in 1861. Jefferson Davis relieved Johnston of duty in 1864 for failing to stem the Union advance. In 1865 he was restored to his previous rank. On April 26, 1865, General Johnston surrendered his army to General Sherman--a few weeks after Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox--Johnston's surrender virtually closed the Civil War. He was also elected to Congress in 1877 and 1885 and died in 1891 after catching a cold while serving as a pallbearer at General Sherman's funeral.
