JOHN A. DAHLGREN, Union Rear Admiral Who Invented an 11-Inch Gun.
Autograph Letter Signed, "Jno A Dahlgren," in dark ink on light-blue, watermarked, fine-laid paper, March 16, 1855, Ordnance Office U.S. Naval Yard, Washington, DC, 9.75" x 7.9", Choice Extremely Fine. Addressed to Major W. Wade in Pittsburgh, Dahlgren prepares to send material to Wade, in part: "I send you today by Express a Standard Ring Gauge for Calibre of the 9 inch shell-guns..." Usual folds, very good condition.

John A. Dahlgren (1809-1870) was a Pennsylvania ordnance expert who invented the 11-inch Dahlgren gun and developed a percussion lock.
