"Free Franks" by Seward, Sumner, Schurz and Fessenden CHARLES SUMNER, WILLIAM SEWARD & U.S. POLITICIANS, Four Address Panels bearing the Franking Signatures of William Seward, Charles Sumner, Carl Shurz and William P. Fessenden, Choice Fine. This is a fine set of four hand-addressed envelope face panels, ranging in size from 5.5" x 3.5" to 6.75" x 3.75" each bearing a franking signature of one of Lincoln's major political allies. The group includes Lincoln's Secretary of State William Seward on a panel addressed in his hand to Paul P. Todd of Blackstone, Massachusetts. Senator Charles Sumner's franked panel is similarly addressed to the Franklin Advocate in Cambridge port, Massachusetts. Fessenden, who adds "U.S. Senate" below his signature addresses his panel to Daniel Kirby of Eastport, Maine. Carl Shurz's franked panel is addressed in another hand to William C. Todd of Newburyport, Massachusetts. One address panel has been affixed to a piece of card stock for reinforcement, all bear light folds, but are otherwise mostly clean and legible. All are scarce.
