"Old Satan Comes Up Like Jeff Davis..."

1865 Letter from a Union Woman.
Original Manuscript Letter, Measuring 10" x 8", 2 pages, [Breckenridge, Mo.], Very Good. A letter from Eliza Godwin to her cousin Nannie. She wishes that Nannie were there to go to "meeting" with her. In part the letter reads: "...we have such good meetings... the people are working with all of their minds and hearts and souls for the salvation of a lost and ruined people... Nannie I consider my self in the army, and when Old Satan comes up like Jeff Davis rebbles I intend to fight him and gain the victory every time..." There is a 1/2" hole at the centerfold and a few ink smudges that do not affect the quality or readability of this clearly written letter.
