Civil War, Union Broadside with Rules for Recruitment Physicals August 16, 1861, Broadside Circular with Rules for Recruitment Physicals, About Extremely Fine. 9.75" x 7.5," minor marginal fold splits and one small tear along the left edge. These rules were promulgated by the Surgeon General of the Massachusetts Volunteers "...to procure uniformity in the medical examination of Recruits..." Specific instructions follow on how the recruit was to be examined, what medical conditions were to have been evaluated, etc. Absolute disqualifications included ingrown toenails, the letter D (for Deserter) branded in; the loss of the great toe, etc. Recruits were also required to be at least 5'1" in height.
