Naval General Order Regarding "Culpable inefficiency in the discharge of duty"

January 27, 1865, Navy Department General Order No. 47, Choice Mint.
Signed in print by Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, 8.5" x 5.5" printed "general orders". Lieutenant Commander Austin Pendergrast was brought to trial and charged with "Culpable inefficiency in the discharge of duty," because the ship he was in command of "was lying at anchor .... and did not take proper precautions to secure his vessel against surprise and attack by night..."
