U.S. Navy Memorializes Lincoln's Assassination: "A grievous affliction has fallen upon the Nation..." April 19, 1865, Official U.S. Navy Broadside Memorializing Lincoln's Assassination, Very Choice Extremely Fine. This small broadside is printed with a black mourning border, and is titled "GENERAL ORDER, No. 39", signed in print by John A. Dahlgren, Rear Admiral, aboard the Flag Ship "Philadelphia", anchored in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Issued a few days after Lincoln's death, the broadside declares: "A grievous affliction has fallen upon the Nation. President LINCOLN has been assassinated. The vessels of this command will wear their colors half mast, until further orders." 21 guns were to be fired from every vessel, repeated at sunset, and officers would wear crepe on their left arm. The broadside is printed on plain paper measuring 7.75" x 4.8", with several folds and slight toning. Interesting content! Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
