"Going to the coast of Africa to buy Negros" (SHIPPING & SLAVERY). 1792-1809, Lot of Seven Official Documents from Havana, in Spanish, most concerning American or English ships, some with Slavery content. This lot of Seven Official Documents from Havana contains one that is a Partly-Printed port paper from Havana, dated May 26, 1793, with a vignette of a sailing ship, 6.5" x 8.5", in which the owner and captain of the brigantine "Marques de Arcos" states that he is going to the coast of Africa to buy "Negros" [sic]. Six of the documents have a stamped seal at the top, "Hispaniarum Rex, Carolus IV, D.G.," dated from 1792-1809, with a total of more than 30 pages, somewhat toned and soiled, some staining, and some pages light, but with some very interesting content. One tells of an American mercantile ship, the Exchange, captained by Joseph Fitzgerald, laden with provisions and rum, destination Charleston, which ran into some trouble and was taken to Havana; the captain's efforts to get his ship back are related. Another document from 1808-1809 is regarding ten men from a Spanish ship who are prisoners on the English ship Jupiter; England and Spain were at war at this time. A nice group of original documents which should be seen. (7 documents) Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
