Black History
Enslavement of African Americans Was Necessary

1829, "A Treatise on The Patriarchal, or Co-Operative System of Society As it Exists in Some Governments...," 2nd edition, by Zaphaniah Kingsley, Florida, Very Fine.
9" x 6.5" pamphlet with plain brown paper wraps--separated; stitched binding, 16 pages. Lightly toned and foxed throughout. An important and rare early Florida essay on the "benefits" of slavery, arguing the impracticality of colonization (sending African Americans away to Africa or to an island community such as Haiti), and for treating slaves with kindness (patriarchalism). Kingsley also claims that enslavement of African Americans was necessary because the hot, humid Southern climate made labor "unfavorable" for "whites." Most of Kingsley's ideas have been refuted or have fallen out of favor in modern times, but it is interesting to glimpse political-economic literature of this type from the 19th century. An extremely rare and important original text.
