"EXTRACTS FROM THE AMERICAN SLAVE CODE" c. 1830s, Published by "The Anti-Slavery Bugle," Salem, OH, Choice Near Mint. This important abolitionist circular contains abridged selections from the statutes of the states that enforced slavery, as well as the United States Constitution, which provided legal sanction for the inhuman trafficking of human beings. Measuring 9" x 5.5", 4 pages, this is the "second edition of 10,000." The purpose of the circular was to educate and incite the general population of Northern citizens to protest the atrocities suffered by slaves. In part: "...The cardinal principal of slavery, that the slave is not ranked among sentient beings but among things... Every slave found on horseback, without a written permission from his master, shall receive twenty-five lashes.... Any emancipated slave remaining in the state more than a year, may be sold by the overseers.... Any slave convicted of petty treason, murder or willful burning of dwelling houses, may be sentenced to have the right hand cut off, to be hanged in the usual manner, the head severed from the body, the body divided into four quarters and the head and quarters set up in the most public place in the country where such fact was committed!!" Ex: EAHA Auction, August 24, 2002, Lot 613, where it sold for $575. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
