Rebuttal to an Attack on the "Colonization Society" 1835, Pro-African Colonization Society Book, "REESE'S LETTERS TO THE HON. WM. JAY...," By David M. Reese, Published by Leavitt, Lord & Co., New York, Fine. Hardbound cloth cover, first edition presentation copy book, gilt-stamped title on front, 7.5" x 4.75", 128 pages plus advertising. Signed in brown ink, "Jas. Watson Webb" [James Watson Webb], on title page. The overall condition of the book is fine, with faded covers. The binding is pulling away slightly but still in very good shape. It is lightly toned and the print is still very bold. Written as a rebuttal by Dr. Reese in response to an attack on the Colonization Society by the Hon. William Jay. Of interest is the content, and the signature by Webb. James Watson Webb was a soldier, journalist, diplomat, and an author. In 1861 he was Minister to Brazil and through his intimacy with Napoleon III was instrumental in procuring the withdrawal of the French from Mexico.
