Impressive Revolutionary War Era Hand-Colored Print of British Troops Entering New York City c. 1776 Revolutionary War Era, Original Copper Plate Engraving of British Troops Entering New York City, Hand-Colored, Extremely Fine. This lovely quality original, print is from a German produced series known as a Collection des Prospects, popularly known as "Vues d' Optique" this print being published by engraver Francois Xavier Habermann in Augsburg, in 1776. The reverse reading text which is above the image reads, "L'Entre Triumphale De Troupes Royales a Nouvelle Yorck". The subtext reads, being both in German and French, "Der Einzug der Koniglichen Volker in Neu Yorck - L'Entre Triumphale de Troupes royales a Nouvelle Yorck". This print measures a nice large 14.5" x 19.5" and would be nice for display. Also accompanying this print, is an original 1943 dated letter from a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is specifically describing this Revolutionary War era series of Vues d'Optique prints as having such New York views. (2 Items). Many Vues d' Optique prints were imaginative, crude and inaccurate, although some were very well-done. The letters above the text were deliberately reversed since these prints were designed for viewing in optical machines with a magnifying glass and a reflective mirror that gave an illusion of depth and reversed the image.
