Rare 1801 Print "General Washington" by Philip Dawe After a Painting by Wright

January 8, 1801 Print: "GENERAL WASHINGTON", Engraved by Philip Dawe, Published by D. Gully, London, England, Choice Very Fine.
This outstanding, colorful mezzotint of General Washington measures 19.25" x 14.5", and is loosely matted to an overall size of 24" x 19". Print is hinged on the left margin with two pieces of older archival fibrous hinge material. The complete title reads, "General Washington, Late President of the American Congress." Inspired by a painting of R. Wright of Philadelphia, the colors used in this mezzotint features bright blue and reddish contrasts, with excellent flesh color. This image is far nicer than the browns and whites used in typical Washington engravings. Washington is shown in three-quarter length, facing left while holding a sword in his right hand and a tri-cornered hat in his left. He is standing nearly in profile, with a serious, pensive look on his face. Washington is dressed in his dark, royal blue dress uniform, with his white hair pulled back in the usual bow. In the background Washington is depicted in miniature, riding on horseback during a battle, images of American soldiers and a cannon at lower right. Standard light even tone, laid-down on poster board for framing, with a faint crease in the upper right and a few small archival repairs, including a 2" sealed tear at the bottom selvage. Overall, a wonderful historic image that would look magnificent once properly framed for display. Hart 836; Baker 80.
