Seneca War Chief "Red Jacket" Wears His 1792 Silver Oval "George Washington" Indian Peace Medal

1838, McKinney and Hall, Hand-Colored Print of the Seneca Chief "Red Jacket," Choice Very Fine
This is an original print from 1838, which features the portrait of the famed Seneca Chief Red Jacket. In this well known print, Red Jacket is shown wearing his huge Silver Indian Peace Medal that was hand engraved in 1792 by the Philadelphia silversmith Joseph Richardson, Jr. and presented to him on behalf of President George Washington. This hand-painted lithograph was from the original painting by C. B. King and measures 13.25" x 11" being placed in a display mat to 19.5" x 16" and remains in very nice original condition with some faint even natural tone. This is one of the most famous images of any major Indian Chief from that era. Red Jacket was something of a celebrity when he arrived in Washington in 1827 to plead for better treatment of his people. This print was part of the collection that McKinney and Hall assembled by an act of Congress, and the collection remains the finest example of contemporary anthropology from that era.
