Fabulous Woodblock Printing Plate Advertising "Gold Clip Tobacco" c. 1880, Large Woodblock Printing Plate, Used for an Advertisement or Label for "Gold Clip Tobacco," Choice Extremely Fine. This fabulous, original, two-part, hand-engraved, 9.75" x 12" wooden printing plate depicts a woman with long, flowing hair standing beside a container labeled, "Fine Cut," in the center oval area, with "Gold Clip" above and "Tobacco" below. This plate was most likely used to print some sort of advertisement, perhaps part of a poster, or to print a large label for a crate or barrel. This plate consists of a left and a right section, which fit together to form the whole image. This woodblock is in superb condition, with no significant scratches or cracks. The 2 halves are presently held together by strips of duct tape on the back and on the top and bottom edges. This magnificent advertising plate is the largest such item in the major collection we have been offering and is worth a significant premium for both its size and content. A wonderful piece of Advertising and Tobacco History. Gold Clip Tobacco and Gold Clip Cigarettes were brand names of S.F. Hess & Company of Rochester, New York. The company was founded in 1838, the partners being Solomon F. Hess and Simon V. McDowell. This was one of the first tobacco companies to package cigarettes in small cardboard boxes (about 1886) and one of the earliest to issue trade cards with its tobacco products. Hess & Company is well known by collectors today for its early baseball cards of the 1880s. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
