"The United States of America Prosperity Attend Them"

c. 1790 Patriotic Plate: "The United States of America Prosperity Attend Them," Choice Very Fine.
This 6.4" diameter white plate features magenta glaze lettering: "The United States of America Prosperity attend them." The script is surrounded by a "tower and ivy" design of the same color. The plate shows evidence of a very small hairline crack to the lower right rim, not detracting from the central script or design.

The script points out an interesting change that occurred in the 19th century. During the antebellum period "The United States" was plural (prosperity attend them); following the Civil War, it became singular.
