George Washington "Apotheosis" Memorial Liverpool Pitcher c. 1800, Washington Memorial Liverpool Pitcher: "APOTHEOSIS," Choice Extremely Fine. This exceptional, high quality, historical Liverpool Pitcher is 8" tall and 6.5" at its widest point, this Liverpool pitcher has a congruous ceramic handle, repaired previously at the top, and black transfer prints on each side and under the spout. One image, "APOTHEOSIS", shows Washington in heaven, seated on a cloud with light shining down on him and angels guiding him into his afterlife. Cherub faces resting atop wings form an oval border around the scene. Below, a banner reads "APOTHEOSIS," reinforcing Washington's status as a glorified and exalted figure. The image on the other side of the pitcher "INDEPENDENCE," shows an oval legend surrounded by a "LIBERTY" cap and patriotic symbols of liberty and independence. The Legend reads, "As he tills your rich globe, the old peasant shall tell, While his bosom with Liberty Glows, How your Warren expired--how Montgomery fell, And how Washington humbled your foes." Under the spout, a transfer print features an American heraldic eagle with a shield body, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons and a banner, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," in its curved beak, and 13 Stars above. There are some minor incongruities on the surface of the pitcher, particularly the spout, but they do not affect the quality of the transfer images. A beautiful, museum quality display item.
