George Washington "APOTHEOSIS" Liverpool Pitcher c. 1800, Historic Liverpool Pitcher, "APOTHEOSIS" of Washington, Choice Extremely Fine. An immaculate, off-white Liverpool pitcher, 8" high, 4.5" diameter base with two black transfer prints commemorating the death of George Washington. One side features a large oval print depicting Washington in robes, accompanied by angels as he ascends to the heavens. The outer rim of the print has the faces of winged cherubs, and the bottom scroll reads: "APOTHEOSIS." The print on the opposite side depicts mourners at Washington's tomb: There is an angel, a uniformed soldier (presumably Lafayette), and a balding man in a dark suit. The outside of the print is ringed by the names of the states. A 3" high print of a heraldic eagle, shield and stars, is placed beneath the spout. A beautiful and impressive item, with crisp, clear prints. Ex: EAHA Auction, August 28, 2004, Lot 508, where it sold for $3,162. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
