38-Star American Flag With Hand Cut Stars

c. 1876, 38-Star American Flag, with hand cut and sewn stars, Choice Very Fine.
This 38-star American flag, measuring 5'5" x 11' 6," is made of wool bunting with machine sewn stripes. The cotton stars are single appliquéd and hand sewn to one side with the canton, which was hand cut to show the stars on the other side as well. The hoist has 2 brass grommets, and the corners have been reinforced near the hoist. Colorado was admitted as the 38th state on August 1, 1876, and this flag became official on July 4, 1877. This flag has faded somewhat, has scattered moth holes and some fraying at the corners of the fly end.
