Keith Milow (b.1945) nash crome
fibreglass and resin with iron wash, executed in 1994, 19 x 28 x 5 in., 48.3 x 71.1 x 12.8 cm.

***Provenance: Private Collection, London (acquired directly from the artist). Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1967, Milow worked in New York for fifteen years before moving to Amsterdam in 2002 where he now lives and works. An artist of very singular vision, his unique sculptures seem to be made from solid metals and glow with rich patinas of rust or verdigris. Coated with iron or copper wash, these fibreglass and resin pieces consist of shallow tiers embossed with names spelled out in classic versals. The objects invoke the time when fine detailing was obligatory for every product, utilitarian or ornamental. The illusionist metal surfaces with artificially oxidized metal powder evoke the transience of even the most lasting materials. Impressive in scale and precision, Milow's beautiful objects are fitting monuments for modernism: substantial yet artificial. As Mary Rose Beaumont explains in the London Review, "The multiplicity of signs and symbols deployed with elegance and faultless judgment to play on these surfaces is astonishing. Not surprisingly, since Milow is a sculptor, the shapes are fully volumetric. Balls appear to float weightlessly against an airy background, architectural elements appear to extrude from the surface, and curlicues wind around like ribbons round a maypole." Examples of his work are to be found in collections worldwide including Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate Gallery, London; and the Henry Moore Foundation, UK, amongst others. .
