first edition, presentation copy to "Professor Hargreave from the author" and with signature of Henry Hargreave Fawcett dated 1884 on front pastedown, 16pp. publishers' catalogue at end dated November 1847, foxed, original cloth elaborately stamped in blind, binder's ticket of Remnant & Edmonds at end, very slight wear to corners and head of spine, otherwise a very good copy, 8vo, 1847.

***This work, together with George Boole's first paper on the subject, which first appeared on the same day, forms the basis of structured formal logic on which the work of the twentieth century logicians Turing and Von Neumann depended. De Morgan was recognised as a mathematical giant in his own time but the importance of his work on symbolic logic was not fully appreciated until nearly a hundred years later..
