***In his 'Ornithological Biography', John James Audubon, the great painter and naturalist, described a visit to Bewick in 1827 during which he was struck by the engraver's skill: "The good gentleman, after breakfast, soon betook himself to his labours, and began to shew me, as he laughingly said, how easy it was to cut wood; but I soon saw that cutting wood in his style and manner was no joke, although to him it seemed indeed easy". Bewick's impact upon future generations of naturalists cannot be overstated as he made field study an essential part of a naturalist's training.
