Nares (Capt. Sir George S.) and Capt. Frank T. Thomson. H.M.S.Challenger. Reports...with Abstract of Soundings & Diagrams of Ocean Temperature..., 7 vol. [all published], each one of 250 copies, 29 folding hand-coloured charts, browned, some light spotting or soiling, one or two leaves loose, ex-Royal Meteorological Society library set with cancelled stamp on front free endpapers, most also with contemporary ink signature, original limp cloth, titles in gilt on upper covers, rubbed, spines rather worn and frayed, lower cover of vol.4 water-stained at foot, folio, 1873-76.***Rare set of reports of the first large-scale voyage made primarily for studying oceanography. The first three reports are by Nares, the last four by Thomson as Nares was recalled in 1874 to take command of the Alert and the Discovery in the British Antarctic Expedtion. Presumably preliminary reports were given only to libraries, the full Challenger reports were not published until 1880 onwards.. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
