Busby (Charles Augustine) A Collection of Designs for Modern Embellishments suitable to Parlours, Dining & Drawing Rooms, Folding Doors, Chimney Pieces, Varandas, Frizes, &c., hand-coloured engraved aquatint pictorial title and 23 plates only (of 24, lacking plate 11), many with aquatint, 13 hand-coloured, some very light marginal soiling, original wrappers, uncut, loose, lacking spine, covers detached and a little creased and frayed at edges, [Abbey Life 9; Berlin Kat. 4000], oblong 4to, J.Taylor, [c.1833]. ***Rare architectural pattern-book by the chief designer of Regency Brighton. Busby arrived in Brighton in 1822 and remained there until his death in 1834. In partnership with Amon Wilds he was responsible for the design and layout of the Kemp Town and Brunswick estates. The Abbey copy and the Spender copy (sold in these rooms for £2600 11-5-2007) both carry the imprint of Edward Lumley on the title, "it would therefore appear that the plates were taken from an earlier book or periodical and republished by Lumley." (Abbey). The Berlin Katalog copy is the same as ours, with the imprint of J.Taylor.. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
