Sign In to see what this sold for

Haghe (Louis) Bristol and Exeter Railway with Train of Carriages approaching Bristol,
locally published pastoral landscape bisected by the railway, the Avon Gorge and Clifton Suspension Bridge in the background, original hand-coloured lithograph by the Bristol printing firm of Lavars & Ackland, 210 x 270mm., slight marginal spotting and faint exposure line, a few short repaired tears at sheet edges, well outside image, hinged into conservation mount, Bristol, Hamilton, Adams & Co., c.1841; with a late 18th century issue of an engraved view of the Monument in London, by Bickham after Canaletto(2)

***The Bristol and Exeter Railway allowed the merchants of Bristol access to the English Channel and the Continent without having to negotiate the perils of rounding the Cornish peninsula. It followed hard on the heels of the Great Western Railway, and was also engineered by Brunel, the first section opening in 1841, before completion in 1844. .
