IMPORTANT STAMPED "BAECHER / WINCHESTER, VA" POLYCHROME-GLAZED EARTHENWARE WASH BOWL AND PITCHER, deep bowl featuring three scrolls applied to the rear rim above an attached soap dish with punched drain holes, each side of rim with an open scroll handle and rear orb, maker's stamp on bowl interior and on front rim, tall bulbous pitcher with a triple-spur handle and square-edge foot, double stamped under base. Note: This extremely rare bowl and pitcher is the prototype for the much more commonly seen examples produced by the Eberlys in Strasburg a decade later. According to Comstock, Lorenzo Fleet was working at Baecher's shop during and after the Civil War and was probably responsible for introducing this distinctive form to Eberly during his employment there from about 1877 to 1885

Remarkably well preserved, bowl with a shallow, approximately 1" diameter, chip/glaze spall to the upper handle edges and rear center scroll, two manufacturing glaze pops to rim, and two small manufacturing losses to soap dish between holes which is glazed over, pitcher with light wear to rim and a section of the foot reattached, which does not affect the interior
