1859 DRY RIVER, ROCKINGHAM CO., VA DECORATED SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE DIMINUTIVE PITCHER, approximately 1 1/2 pint, classic Dry River form featuring a bulbous body with a graceful sloping shoulder and tall neck, single incised shoulder ring, squared handle with an unusual protruding thumb rest at top, brushed cobalt "1859" flanking a triple blossom tulip with conjoined flower heads, additional brushed feathers on spout and body, stripes across the handle, and a curious unidentified circular symbol below date. Produced at John D. Heatwole's Dry River Pottery, or at Lindsey Morris' Pottery, located across the river from Heatwole's site. 1859. 6 1/2" h, 3" dia rim, 3 1/2" dia base
Reference: Form and date closely parallel Evans/Suter, p. 46, fig. 45. Decoration closely parallels Evans/Suter, p. 55, figs, 70, 71, and p. 93, fig. 176 Provenance: Property of a Virginia private collector.Purchased at Green Valley Auctions in the mid 1990s Note: This important Rockingham Co. pitcher is seemingly unique in regard to its size and its combination of classic and prolific decoration, including the 1859 date. Heatwole and Morris each married one of Andrew Coffman's daughters and had worked together at Coffman's Beldor site before moving to the Dry River area. Considering their familial ties and close working proximity, it seems reasonable to assume that they worked together from time to time at Dry River Condition reportVery good condition, three very minor rim flakes, hairline off the rim adjacent to the handle and across the base
