EXCEPTIONAL STAMPED "S BELL", WINCHESTER, VA DECORATED SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE MINIATURE PITCHER, extremely finely potted in a distinctive Staffordshire jug form with a pronounced stepped shoulder, double-spur handle, and beaded foot, extensive brushed cobalt decoration including a primary double tulip, feathers on shoulder and spout, and closely spaced dashes around the rim and across the handle. Samuel Bell, Winchester, VA. 1825-1842. 4 1/4" h, 2 1/2" dia rim, 2 3/8" dia base
Reference: Decoration parallels Comstock, p. 208, fig. 5.20
Provenance: This important little pitcher is unparalleled in regard to its delicate and sophisticated English form as well as its thin-walled body. The extremely rare 3/16" high stamp is without a period after the "S," differentiating it from Bell's stamp usually seen on his Winchester period products. Without question, this is one of the finest American stoneware miniatures in existence
Outstanding condition, several very minor rim flakes opposite the decoration, hairline crack around the upper and lower handle terminals indicating an old repair to the handle
