POSSIBLY UNIQUE STAMPED "BAECHER / WINCHESTER, VA" POLYCHROME-GLAZED EARTHENWARE STAND, hollow conical form decorated with applied sprigged and molded flower heads, leaves, stems, and a hummingbird, squared foot with two punched holes above on opposing sides for securing the stand, maker's stamp repeated four times around the exterior. Fitted with a period red gazing globe of appropriate proportions but of unknown association. Anthony Wise Baecher, Winchester, VA. 1870-1889. Stand 8 1/8" h, 4 1/4" dia upper rim, 7 3/4" dia foot; ball 12" dia overall; 20" h overall

Note: While the actual use of this stand is unknown, the best possibilities seem to be either as a support for a flower or cemetery urn, or as in the configuration seen here, as a support for a garden or gazing ball. While the later use would seem illogical at first, research indicates that gazing balls were at their peak of popularity in the late Victorian period (1870-1901), the exact period in which Baecher produced this stand. Furthermore, while the gazing ball was found in many southern antebellum gardens, they were also placed at entrance ways to ward off witches as well as indoors to bring the homeowner good luck and prosperity

One side of decoration is intact, the other side with the loss of one leaf, stems, and the bird, small chip to upper rim, numerous small areas of glaze exfoliation which is normal, ball with normal deterioration to interior silvering
