RARE VIRGINIA CARVED AND PAINTED SNIPE DECOY BY ALMA FITCHETT, solid softwood body with carved eyes and original mortised and wedged bill, original dry speckled polychrome paint, carved "AF" monogram underneath, without stand. Alma Fitchett, Smith Island and Townsend, VA. Fourth quarter 19th century. 10 1/4" long

Provenance: Property of Alma Koontz, granddaughter of Alma Fitchett, descended in the family
Note: Fitchett served in the Life Saving Service on Smith Island along with other noted early Virginia makers, Robert Andrews and John Henry Downes

Condition report

Very good as-found condition, small losses to bill, light flaking to paint, expected shot and usage wear
