PENNSYLVANIA SAMPLER.
Mary Schull, Easton area, Northampton,1819, silk and cotton on linen. The sixteen-year-old maker inscribed her name, age and date as well as rows of alphabets and numbers. A large flock of black birds fill the sky and a two-color picket fence surrounds the federal style house and pine trees. Minor imperfections. Conservation mounted and framed. 17 1/2"h. 14 1/2"w. The sampler exhibits early characteristics of Lehigh Valley samplers, especially those found around the Easton area. The well-detailed architectural elements of the house are outlined in white cotton and the horizontally striped evergreen brown trunks extend into the foliage. See Betty Ring, Girlhood Embroidery, fig. 509 and 510. Among the early 19th century Schull families residing in Eastern Pennsylvania, the strongest attribution that can be made is to the Mary Schull born about 1805 to Peter Schull and Anna Maria Sells Schull of neighboring Montgomery County. This sampler was chosen by The Scarlet Letter to be reproduced as a kit, one is included with this lot. Historical research accompanies the lot. Condition reportCondition: Half inch oval stain on top right. A few scattered areas of ground loss, two due thin threads, the other two are approx.1/4" and have been carefully backed with similar colored fabric. Upper right border has loss to ground. All in all, damage is mininal and sampler is in very good condition. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging.
