PENNSYLVANIA SAMPLER.
Caroline Burson, Bucks County, 1812, silk on linen. An example of a classic Quaker sampler containing many typical motifs; the half-medallions, realistic sprays of flowers, eight-pointed stars and Roman-style lettering. Nine-year-old Caroline signed and dated her work. Good bright colors. Some loss to black threads. Conservation mounted and framed. 19"h. 19 1/4"w. Ex Garth's, January 8, 2005, lot 1042. CarolineÆs family were early Quaker settlers of Bucks County where she was born November 15th, 1803, the second of nine children of James Burson (1777-1855) and Deborah Stroud Burson (1782-1886). She was raised in Springfield Township and probably attended one of the several Quaker schools in the area. In June 1842 Caroline married William Hollinshead, a former local farmer, now a pioneer in Wisconsin. William brought his 39 year old bride to Walworth County, Wisconsin, where their two children were born. Caroline died in 1890, William in 1895, well- respected founders of their community.
