ENGLISH SAMPLER.
Elizabeth Roberts, England, 1810, silk on wool. Ten-year-old Elizabeth used a variety of stitches in creating her sampler. A lengthy religious verse is bordered by flowering vines, below which a large butterfly rests on a tree, sheep stand beneath, the shepherd plays a flute and a well-dressed lady holds a branch in one hand, a bird in the other. Two peacocks flank the maker's cartouche "Elizabeth Roberts Her Work in the 10 ye of her age 1810." Good bright colors. Some edge loss. Conservation mounted and framed. 19"h. 14 1/2"w.

Condition: A few scattered holes. Loss to ground fabric at the bottom edge.
