MASSACHUSETTS FAMILY RECORD.
Probably Rebecca or Lydia Barnes, Waltham, Middlesex County, 1805-1810, silk on linen. Family genealogy stitched in the form of a fruit laden apple tree, ambitiously embroidered, trunk and fruits as well as the entire background heavily covered in silk thread. The maker lists her parents' births and marriage dates in conjoined hearts at the base of the tree, their eight children recorded in the fruit. Some imperfections. Conservation mounted and framed. 17"h. 15"w. Ex Garth's, September 5, 2004, lot 586.

Samuel Barnes (1750-1797) and Grace Warren (b.1756) married October 22, 1774, in Waltham where their eight children were born. The two youngest, Rebecca (b.1792) and Lydia (b.1794), are the most probable sampler makers, the other two daughters being beyond normal school age. Extensive research has identified a group of early 19th century family tree needlework stitched by girls living in northeast Middlesex county. The majority are from the Waltham and Watertown area. The makers ranged in age from 12 to16 years old. While some are more elaborate, most all contain conjoined hearts bearing the parent's dates and apples with the birth date and name of each child. Usually the background is embroidered and the fruit's background color signifies the child's gender.

Historical research accompanies the lot.
