PORTRAIT OF A BOY IN THE MANNER OF JACOB MAENTEL (PENNSYLVANIA/INDIANA, 1763-1863).
Watercolor on paper, unsigned. Full-length profile portrait of a young man, with a Germanic, stone house in the background. Minor toning and staining. 10 5/8"h. 8 1/2"w., in a decorated frame, 13 7/8"h. 12"w.

The clothing dates this portrait and the portrait of the subject's brother (see lot 107) to the 1830s. Additionally, the architecture of the house in the background suggests a Pennsylvania locale.

Condition: Even toning, minor stanining. What appears to be a pencil signature on back of J.A. Davis and date of 1854 was likely added (the handwriting doesn't match Davis' well enough, and the clothing doesn't match the date).
